Getting paid minimum wage to ride the bus

So, I commute about half an hour each way to work, and taking the bus takes, more or less, an hour. So, switching from my current drive to the bus would cost me about 240 hours per year, and, at the current rate of $1.25 per ride, about $600 per year. However, driving back and forth would cost around $400 in gas, then some amount for insurance, lets say $800, and some amount for owning/maintenance, probably around $1500.  (I'm pretty sure I spent around twice that last year.) So, switching to public transit might save me around $2100 per year, or about $8.75 per hour additional of my commute, a dollar fifty more than minimum wage. Well, it is cheating a bit to only count the difference.

On the other hand, I'd have to get rid of my car, something I can't bring myself to do...
